LAMKA. 4 August 2013: The family of a one and a half year old boy who died today at the Children Ward of the District Hospital has alleged negligence on the part of the hospital staff and lack of oxygen for the child’s death.

One and half year old Khupsianvanglian lost his life due to want of service from the doctors, said a relative.

Relatives say that the boy was suffering from high fever and vomiting and was admitted at the CCpur district hospital yesterday.

This morning, he was given oxygen support by the hospital staff but unfortunately it malfunctioned.

Following the boy’s difficulty in breathing, some social workers and family members rushed to the Kuki Khanglai Lawmpi (KKL) office near the hospital and borrowed oxygen for the boy.

Onlookers say that the staff on duty took 25 minutes to fix the oxygen to the boy and when they finally managed to complete the process, it was too late and the boy had already died.

A person who was present during the ordeal, Boboi said that they had actually called on the staffs of the hospital for atleast 10 times, however, when the staffs came after a good 20 minutes and asked for the boy to be brought into their room, the boy failed to respond to the oxygen.

Just a few week ago, hospital staff at the Children Ward of Ccpur Dist.  allegedly asked for Rs 100 to inject a child patient which had enraged the parent who informed this IFP correspondent to report the incident. However, due to want of hard evidence, it was not reported.

The mother of the boy who died today said that whatever is done now cannot bring back her son and said she would want the authorities to be more prepared so that no other patient have to face the lack of oxygen in the future.

A nurse, on condition of anonymity said that this is not the first time the duty staff on duty at the Children Ward were ignoring patient calls or failed to promptly doing their duty.
