Five surrenders to local club after assaulting locals using firearms

IMPHAL, August 7: A man has been admitted at the Raj Polyclinic in a serious condition after being allegedly assaulted by five armed individuals at Sagolband Bijoy Govinda yesterday around 10:15pm.

The injured has been identified as RK Ranjit @ Ibomcha (48), son of (L) Thambalsana of Sagolband Bijoy Govinda.

The five are believed to have come out after having a party for their selection as Sub-Inspector Manipur Police, which was declared yesterday.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that the five involved, including the main accused K Devjit surrendered before the Sagolband Mantrimayum Leikai Voluntary Organization (SMLVO) today evening along with the weapons used during the assault of RK Ranjit.

The five along with the guns were later handed over to the Imphal police.

The other four accused have been identified as Y Surajkumar, son of Bidhu of Wangkhei Ningthem Pukhri Mapal; Ningthoujam Rajivkumar, son of SurenderKumar of Wahengbam Leikai; L Khelensana, son of Angou of Tekcham and RK Roshan, son of Sanayaima of Kangjabi Phongeishangbam Leikai.

They `surrendered` along with one Double barrel Licence gun and one .32 pistol.

Following last night’s violent assault, locals of the Sagolband Mantrimayum Leikai Voluntary Organization also held an emergency meeting on the issue this morning.

Meanwhile, speaking to media persons at the SMLVO club premises today, a spokesperson of the club said that Ranjit is in a serious condition with head injuries.

He continued that the incident occurred last night when the victim was sitting in front of his residential gate around 10:15pm.

He said that as Ranjit was sitting there, a Maruti 800 car came in a high speed and splashed water at Ranjit following which, the later shouted behind them.

Hearing the shout, the car came back leading Ranjit to duck in a nearby drain, he said.

The car then went away but after about 15-20 minutes, it car came along with two other vehicles- a Bolero and a Gypsy, he continued.

The men coming down the three vehicles numbering five in number were armed with small weapons. Without saying anything, the five started beating Ranjit who was still sitting in front of his residential gate, he said.

Hearing of the commotion, when the local neighbours came out and tried to intervene, the five shot their guns and shouted that no one should come towards them, he continued.

However, as the crowd grew larger, they eventually fled from the scene leaving behind a seriously injured Ranjit.

Ranjit was rushed to RIMS from where he was shifted to Raj Polyclinic, he said.

This morning, it was revealed that one of the five was one K Debjit alias Nanao 30 son of (L) Lalmani of Amudon Akham Leirak.

Following the revelation, the club volunteers and locals went to his residence but found that he was not present there, the spokesperson continued.

The volunteers informed the mother to bring Debjit to the club before 9am for compromise, however, he failed to turn up even after it was 10am, following which, the volunteers and the locals again went to the house and found that the family members were trying to flee from their house in an I-20 car along with some of their belongings.

On seeing the locals, the family members ran inside their house at which the infuriated locals damaged some four wheelers and two wheelers parked in the residential compound.

The damaged vehicles include, an i-20, two Maruti 800 cars, one Honda Access, Honda Activa, Honda Pleasure, Kinetic Honda and an Enfield Bullet.

He further said that, the locals further informed the family to bring the accused to the club at the earliest.

The club had also filed a case with the Imphal Police station regarding the assault of RK Ranjit, he said.
