IMPHAL, August 10: A girl has moved the High Court challenging the anticipatory bail granted to a man she has accused of luring her with false promises and finally abandoning her. The High Court has accepted to reconsider the anticipatory bail and a directive has been passed.

The case pertains to the accused namely Laishram Samananda (24), son of Shyamkishore, a resident of Wabagai Yangbi Mamang Leikai under Kakching Police Station. The girl Purnima (name changed) is from Khurai area.

The accused and Purnima had eloped on 17 August 2011 and in accordance with customs, Samananda’s family members came to the girl’s residence to break the news of elopement. Later , Purnima was escorted back to her residence on August 19. The ‘Waroipot’(finalization of the marriage) was held on September 2011  and the marriage was scheduled on June 2012.

As the time of marriage approached, no words came from the groom’s family and the bride party went to inquire. They were told that Samananda was undergoing a bout of ill fortune as per his horoscope and hence, cannot marry for 10 years.

Purnima then went to meet the accused who is said to have mentioned his refusal to marry her on reasons that she had eloped with another man before. He also offered her a lakh and half as compensation amount for damages incurred. The date of payment was scheduled on May 11, 2013 and was to be transacted at Porompat PS. But, on the said date, the accused did not come and sent some women on his behalf. The women charged that Purnima’s family was trying to extort money from Samananda and filed a report to the police instead.

Following the developments, the victim filed a petition to the CJM, Imphal East which directed the police to investigate the matter. The police filed a case under section 420/417/406 IPC of FIR number 147(5)2013. Meanwhile , the accused  got anticipatory bail from the Sessions judge, Manipur East.

Purnima then challenged the bail order and filed a revision case (Number 9 of 2013) to the High Court of Manipur. The Court in a hearing made on August 5 directed that the anticipatory bail of Samananda will be valid till  August 21 and that the bail order will be reconsidered.
