Gorkhas observes `Balidan Diwas` at Kanglatongbi

    IMPHAL, August 25: The Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh Manipur State unit celebrated the 7th Balidan Diwas at Kanglatongbi Gorkha Community Hall today.

    The function was attended by Sekmai MLA Kh Devendra Singh, Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh Manipur president Prasad Shivakoli and BGP Manipur patron KK Chhetry as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.

    “The Balidan Diwas is celebrated on this day all over the country by the Gorkha community to commemorate the supreme sacrifice made by Gorkha freedom fighter Major Durga Malla. He was hanged to death by the British at Red Fort, Delhi on this day in 1944,” said a release of Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh Manipur.   

    Tributes were also paid to other Gorkha freedom fighters which include Niranjan Singh Chhetry who was hanged to death by the British in Manipur, it said.

    Nepali cultural dances, patriotic songs and Khukuri dance marked the celebration, it added.
