Man killed in accident, locals block NH-37 temporarily

IMPHAL, August 4: A 48 year old man was killed in a road accident after he was hit by a truck bearing registration No MN-01-7985 at None Bazaar under None police station in Tamenglong district yesterday at around 4:10 pm, police said.

Police identified the deceased as Benjamin Rongmei (48).

He was a teacher at a school in None Bazaar and was hit by the truck which was coming from Imphal towards Jiribam.

He succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital, police said.

The truck driver has been identified as Sarangthem Raj Meitei and the owner of the truck has been identified as Somorjit of Nongmeibung in Imphal East district.

Noney police have taken up a case in regard with the incident and the driver and the truck have also been taken under custody.

The dead body was handed over to the family after a post mortem was conducted at JINMS morgue today.

When the dead body arrived at Noney Bazaar this afternoon, locals blocked NH-37 for some time.

Police said that the locals’ motive was to stop the vehicular movement at Noney Bazaar while they conduct condolence meeting and while they performed the deceased`s last rites. But truck drivers who had no knowledge of what was happening started panicking, police said.

Later at around 6:30 pm, things went back to normal.
