National seminar mulls tourism prospects, problems in state

IMPHAL, August 22:  The Department of Commerce, Manipur University along with the Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi organized a two day national seminar on ‘Tourism Industry in Manipur: Problems and Prospects’ at the conference hall of the Commerce Department, today.

The inaugural function was attended by Vice Chancellor Manipur University H Nandakumar Sharma, registrar Manipur University Prof N Lokendra Singh and HOD Commerce Dept Manipur University Prof GP Prasain as presidium members.

A souvenir was also released during the function.

The first technical session of the function was conducted under the theme “Tourism industry in Manipur and its problems and prospects”, with Dr Athiqul H Laskar, chairman Conant Institute USA-India as chairperson and Dr E Nixon Singh, Associate Prof Management department Mizoram University as the rapporteur.

Speaking to this IFP reporter, M Sanjoy Singh, who had presented a paper on “A study on tourist perception about rural tourism in Manipur”, said that there has been development in the tourism sector in the state.

He further said that academicians, intellectuals, philosophers, researchers and others have accepted that the state has witnessed some development in the small time tourism of the state.

However, in order to attract a vast development in the tourism sector, the government need to take a major initiative and fulfill the state’s needs for better roads, infrastructure, and maintenance of law and order, he said.

The second session of the program was conducted in the afternoon on the topic “Tourism industry in North East India”, with Prof GP Prasain, HOD Commerce Manipur University as chairperson and Dr N Tejmani Singh, Associate Professor Manipur University as rapporteur.

Nine individuals presented their paper in the second session.
