BISHNUPUR, August 16: The Green Revolution Society (GRS), Manipur in association with district police, Bishnupur today organised a tree plantation function, as part of its Van Mahotsav 2013 observation, at Mantha Hillock in Bishnupur district.
The formal function of the tree plantation was presided by O Kenedy, secretary, Green Revolution Society and Th Radheshyam Singh, SP Bishnupur as chief guest while M Kesho, Range Officer Bishnupur, N Saratchandra retired associate professor, M Ibochouba social worker attended as guests of honour respectively.
Around one hundred people from Naorem and Oinam were present at the function.
Addressing the function, Th Radheshyam Singh, SP said that human beings are continuously cutting down trees for human consumption which has led to mass scale deforestation thereby threatening human survival. So, tree plantation is necessary, he added.
He further said that not only in the hills, but trees in the valley area are also disappearing except in the local deity enclosures where some local varieties are preserved, he said while adding that trees and flowers are also giving human comfort.
In order to preserve soil erosion, cutting down of trees in large numbers should be avoided, he said and added that if someone cut down trees for necessity, plantation is and necessary and effort to grow new trees must be maintained.
The Range Officer, M Kesho Singh said that the tree plantation program today was being organised as a part of the joint effort to contend the ill effects of global warming.
N Saratchandra Singh observed in the function that the Forest Department has planted trees at the roadside as a part of social forestry and after some time the trees are cutting down by Electricity Department to protect the live electric wires. Around 300 fruit bearing trees such as mango, lemon, jackfruit saplings were planted at VDF campus and Chumba Mantharam approach road.
