Vigilantism against liquor vendors

IMPHAL, August 13: Acting on a joint resolution of the combined meira paibis of Khabam Lamkhai and  Chumbriethong along with the AIM Club taken during a meeting yesterday, volunteers today conducted a drive against liquor and other intoxicants in the localities.

Volunteers of the organizations today conducted drives at Khabam Leikai looking for anyone selling liquor.

Speaking to this IFP reporter during the drive, Khabam Chumbreithong Meira paibi secretary Ch Bina said in the last two three years, 11 individuals have died due to alcohol related complications in the locality which has only increased the number of widows.

She continued that unless the elders come out strongly and totally ban the sale or consumption of alcohol or any other intoxicants in the locality, the problem could only aggravate.

During yesterday’s meeting, the organizations had resolved that first time offenders will be made to pay Rs 10000 as fine while repeated offenders will be sternly acted upon and made to pay the fine, she said.

The meeting had also resolved that any family found renting out their premises to anyone involved in selling of liquor or other intoxicants will also be made to pay a fine of Rs 5000.
