Woman succumbs to burn injuries, husband picked up by police

IMPHAL, August 16: A 28 year old housewife, a mother of four, Shakeela Begum (28), wife of Md Fakuruddin alias Boipu, of Kwakta Terakhongsangbi under Moirang police station, who was battling for her life with 95 percent burns since July 31 succumbed to her injuries at the Incentive Care Unit (ICU) ward, Shija Hospital today morning at around 7.15 am.

Police have arrested her husband today at around 11 am in regard to case, said a relative of the woman.  

Shakeela`s dead body was handed over to her parental family after a post mortem examination was conducted at RIMS morgue.

Speaking to the media at RIMS morgue, Lakhiuddin, a realative of the deceased, alleged that Shakeela was set on fire by her own husband Fakuruddin on the night of July 31 at around 11 pm following a heated argument between the couple.

He said soon after a heated argument, their neighbours heard Shakeela’s family members shouting ‘fire.’ The neighbours went rushing to their house and found Sakeela in flames. They put off the fire and took her to RIMS hospital in a critical condition with 95 percent burnt, he maintained.

Her parental family was informed about the incident only the next day , he said.

He said that Shakeela was referred to Shija hospital from RIMS on August 10 after her health condition deteriorated.
