Youth, women wings of BJP conduct plantation drive at MU

IMPHAL, August 17: The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha and the Mahila Morcha, Manipur Pradesh jointly organized a tree plantation program at the Manipur University campus today.

Volunteers of both the morchas along with the MU Vice chancellor H N K Sharma and other officials of the university attended the tree plantation programme.

Speaking to the media persons at the end of the programme, S Satyabhama, vice president Mahila Morcha Manipur Pradesh said that following the recent natural disaster at Uttarkhand, the BJP has taken up the process of planting more trees in an effort to avert the occurrence of such calamities again.

As per the guideline of the party central leaders, atleast 1000 trees should be planted in each district of the state, she said.

She further appealed to all to reduce deforestation, control climatic changes as well as protect it from the natural calamities and bring a green Manipur; which she added is also the main objective of today’s programme.

President of the BJP Youth Morcha, O Malesh said that the morcha is observing the whole month of August as “Athouba Singi Ningsing tha”, and the month-long observation was inaugurated on August 1 and a debating competition was also held on August 11.

He further told this IFP reporter that the aim is to plant as much as 100 saplings inside the MU campus.

Social service programme in the surrounding area of the three Ima keithels will be conducted on August 25 and a drawing competition will also held at the party’s office on August 28.

The closing function of the month long observation will be held on August 31, he added.

Speaking to media persons, MU Vice Chancellor Prof HNK Sharma said tree plantation in the surrounding area of the social science block is somewhat deficient, and the plan is to plant more saplings especially those of fruit bearing trees, and make it more “environmental friendly buildings”.

When being asked by this IFP reporter on the looking after part of the tree saplings, the VC said there will be no problem on the matter. He further elaborated that more than 7000 trees including fruit bearing ones have been planted inside the campus of which only a mere 5 percent had dried up.

After 5-6 years, Manipur University campus will be one of the best university campuses in the country and the students will have even fruits to eat, he said.
