IMPHAL, September 18: A day-long awareness and screening camp on “Awareness Rising and Screening Camp on Preventive Diabetic Among School Children with Parents and Teachers’’ organized by Rural Development Society (RDS), Wangjing under the sponsorship of World Diabetic Foundation (WDF) was held today at Merciful High School, Hangul.

The camp was conducted with the aim to educate students, parents and teachers about the diabetic disease and how to prevent it.

A free glucose test of blood samples of the students to check the presence of diabetic was also conducted during the camp.

Giving the key note address of the occasion, project co-ordinator RDS Wangjing Leishangthem Dangu stated that as per the report of International Diabetic Federation, around 371 billion people across the world are suffering from diabetics and the number might double by 2030 and that India has the highest number of diabetics among the countries.

He further said according to the report of IDF tabled in 2007, India alone constituted 40.9 million diabetic patient, 39.8 million in China, 39.2 million in USA, 9.6 million in Russia and 7.4 million in Germany while adding that at older time, it was considered that older people could only suffered from the Diabetic but children of young age has also started suffering it.

Saying that the camp was organized to make the students become aware about the disease, he said that such 100 of such will be organized in 100 schools in Thoubal district today’s camp was the 24th.

While speaking as a resource person, Dr H Tenba said the symptoms of the diabetic disease are excessive passing of urine, excessive feeling of thirsty/hunger, weakening of the leg/hand, loss of appetite, loss of weight, lack of eyesight etc adding that if the disease is not treated timely then one may suffer from loss of eyesight, kidney failure and cardiac arrest.
