MOREH, September 1: Following the arrest of a suspected PRA cadre (Pakan Revolutionary Army), by Moreh cdos from Moreh yesterday, a sudden bandh was imposed at Moreh today.
According to reports, Moreh police commandos arrested the cadre identified as Thenkhei alias Chongjokai Kipgen (22), son of Thongyo Kipgen from Chikim Veng in Moreh yesterday at around 3 pm.
Following the arrest, a large number of womenfolk of Chikim Veng stormed Moreh police station at around 9:40 pm demanding release of the arrested person.
The police fired several rounds of tear gas shells as well as live bullets in the air to disperse the mob.
Some women protesters were reportedly injured in the police action.
Later, there were reports of some well armed men firing several rounds towards the gate of Moreh SDPO complex.
The report said that the police commandos stationed there also retaliated but taking advantage of the darkness, the armed men fled from the scene.
Meanwhile, angry villagers of Chikim Veng dismantled and burnt down a temporary police check post located 3 km away from Moreh police station near Kondong Lairembi Khubam. There were also some reports of firing in some parts of Moreh.
High ranking police officials including IGP P Pachao, DIG Y Chandramani, Chandel SP E Priyokumar, Moreh ADC Robert Kshetrimayum and Moreh SDPO Balaram met the representatives of HTC, Kuki Women Union & Human Rights and Chikim Veng villagers, sources said.
The issue was resolved after Thengkei alias Chongjokai Kipgen was released on a PR Bond, sources said. Meanwhile, due to the sudden imposition of the bandh, many people who were coming towards Imphal were left stranded.The sudden developments left many disgruntled people.
Expressing their anger over the sudden imposition of the bandh, the stranded people said that there is no use for Assam Rifles, CDOs, MR and Police in Moreh if anyone can impose bandh at any anytime.
