RIMS celebrates 42nd Foundation Day against 12 hour MCP, Manipur bandh

IMPHAL, September 14: Amidst a 12 hour general strike imposed by the Maoist Communist Party, Manipur today, the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences celebrated its 42th Foundation Day at its Jubilee Hall.

During the function, prizes were distributed to the meritorious students of RIMS and the institute’s annual magazine `REMEDY` and newsletter were released.

Speaking at the function, MP Dr Th Meinya lauded the organizing committee for inviting him to join the foundation day celebration.

He said the health care sector has always encouraged benefits in terms of revenue and employment; and development in this sector will eventually mean development of the economic will have constant growth.

The education system of the state should improve more to produce good schools, he said before adding that the such schools should provide proper sanitation, proper drinking water, good teachers, sufficient electricity and good connectivity.

Before the establishment of the institute in the state, indigenous means of treatment were the main practices, he said.

Since the establishment of RIMS, the state has witnessed advancement of ways of treatment and medicines, he said and added it has also helped changed the mindset of the people from traditional and indigenous ways of treatment to a more scientific means.

He continued that RIMS is the only institute in the country which is run by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

He appealed to all the concern against harming or damaging the RIMS, which has today become a face of the state.

Director RIMS Professor S Sekharjit said that RIMS was established 41 years ago this day on September 14, 1972 as the Regional Medical College.

Since its establishment, the institute has today grown in stature and today has become one of the reputed institutes in the country.

Doctors, specialists produced by the hospital have today become the backbone of medical facilities all over the region, he said.

He continued that RIMS have grown by leaps and bounds over the last few years. It now has nearly 1800 workforce with and enhanced annual outlay which is fully funded by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.

RIMS is now conducting several courses apart from MBBS degree course and have post graduate degree courses in 23 disciplines, super specialty M.Ch. courses in the disciplines of Urology and Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, B.D.S. course with 50 admission per year from the 2012 session in the newly established Dental College, B.Sc. Nursing Course with 50 admissions per year in College of Nursing established in 2009, M Phil course in Clinical Psychology with seven admissions per year, DHLS course in the department of ENT, certificate course in MIS in the department of Surgery and several other short training courses avail in the institute, he said.

He further said that the introduction of a File-Tracking application and Biometric attendance recording system which were taken up in the administrative block has proved their worth.

The CCTV surveillance system which has been operational around the Administrative block and north-eastern sections of the hospital is being expanded to cover the entire hospital area.
