Unknown disease at Nambol Naorem beleived to be `Scrub typhus` (Typhoid) claims one

    BISHNUPUR, Sept 13: A widespread disease displaying symptoms of frequent vomiting and lose motion has been detected at Nambol Naorem area under Nambol police station in Bishnupur district since the last two weeks.

    Altogether, 20 villagers have been affected and many are now hospitalized at RIMS and other hospitals.

    The outbreak has already claimed one life.

    The deceased is identified as Oinam Tharo Devi (56), wife of Oinam Khamba Singh of Naorem Mayai Leikai.

    Tharo Devi was first hospitalized at Nambol PHC and discharged on the same day. After a gap of one day, Tharo Devi was again hospitalized this time at JNIMS hospital and she was later  taken to Shija hospital after two days, where she died.

    Experts at Shija hospital said the disease is confirmed as Scrub typhus (Typhoid) which is an infectious disease that is transmitted to humans from field mice and rats through the bite of mites that live on animals.

    A Sanayaima Singh, ex councilor of Nambol Municipal Council told that most of the victims undergoing treatment in hospitals had participated in a tree plantation drive at Manthak Hillock which lies between Oinal and Naorem.
