CPI to field Dr Nara for inner seat again

IMPHAL, October 25: Former minister and the incumbent secretary of Communist Party of India, Manipur State Council, Dr Moirangthem Nara will the party’s candidate from the inner constituency at the 16th Lok Sabha elections.

The announcement was made during a press meet held at Irabot Bhavan, BT Road this afternoon which was attended by party leaders including Dr Nara himself.

Senior party leader Ningthoujam Mangi said a meeting of the party’s state council was conducted today from 11 am onwards to discuss the candidature of the party for the state’s two Lok Sabha seats. After threadbare discussion, a decision to send Dr Nara from the inner Parliamentary constituency was adopted unanimously, he stated. The candidature of Dr Nara will be recommended to the central leadership for the final approval, he added.

The decision will be taken during the three-day national executive committee meeting of the party being organized to discuss issues related to the election at its party office at Ajay Bhavan in New Delhi from October 28.  

It may be mentioned that Dr Nara fought at the last parliamentary election from the same seat and finished in the second position.

Dr Nara told the reporters that the state is encumbered by several major problems. He said there are concrete evidence that an Ashok Chakra awardee Major Ramkumar of 39th AR was involved in the abduction and murder of a contractor N Krishnadas of Kakching and issuing a ransom demand of Rs 25 lakh.

On behalf of the party, he conveyed appreciation to the team of National Human Rights Commission and meeting Irom Sharmila and meeting victims and families of human rights violation.

He announced that the issue of border-fencing dispute with Myanmar will be brought up during the executive committee meeting as a step to attracting the attention of the Union Ministry of External Affairs.     

Mangi suggested that besides probing the works being taken up at Loktak, the NHRC should inspect the Thoubal Multipurpose Project. The Rs 335 crore venture has been a complete failure, he added.
