Human rights bodies doubt govt carrying out NHRC recommendations

IMPHAL, October 25: Even as the National Human Rights Commission team conducted its second day camp at Hotel Classic, several human rights organizations of the state today called a press meet at the Manipur Press Club following a meeting with the NHRC team.

The state cabinet has failed on all counts though active in only recruiting armed forces, said Babloo Loitongbam, Human Rights Alert.

Apprising the media, on the recommendation of the National Human Rights Commission team for monetary relief of Rs 32 lakh to families of six victims of human rights violation in the state, he said, how far the recommendations will be acted out by the state government, which has neglected even an order of the Supreme Court.

He said, the organizations have urged the NHRC to take an initiative to check if the recommendations of the commission have been acted out.

He said the NHRC has also assured a Sou Moto case on the issue of restriction of visitors to meet Irom Sharmila who has been on a fast and instruct the Chief Secretary to allow visitors.

Babloo further observed that the three day long camp sitting of the commission will bring a new hope in the state; and added that the organizations will monitor the response of the state on this recommendation.

He said, the NHRC team was in the state following pressure from the Supreme Court to conduct the camp to check the human rights violations in the state.

Education activist Grace Jajo said she apprised the commission on the defunct state of the 15 flagship programmes in Ukhrul.

Nalinikanta of CoNE said he apprised the team on the issue of HIV/AIDS and said out of 37 rehabilitations centres only 21 are functioning in the state due to government apathy and negligence.
