IMPHAL, October 13: Aggrieved with the high-handedness of MLAs and Pradhans, which has allegedly caused interference in various Panchayati Raj schemes, local body leaders have resolved to confront tooth and nail against any irregularities.
The resolution was adopted during a one day discussion cum awareness programme under the theme “Proper Functioning of the Panchayati Raj”, organised by Imphal West-I block Panchayat committee at Singda Kadangban Part-I Panthoibi Lampak this afternoon.
Pradhans, Upa Pradhan, members of altogether 24 Gram Panchayats of five assembly segments within Imphal West-I including Lamshang, Sekmai, Sagolband, Patsoi and Konthoujam attended the program and deliberated on several agenda including implementation of Indira Awaj Yojna (IAY), Power on Pancahayat, miscellaneous.
Speaking at the discussion, various local body leaders expressed their disappointment on the alleged high-handedness during the selection of beneficiaries for schemes like Indira Awaz Yojna (IAY), pension schemes and other schemes meant for the deserving.
As a first package for the period 2013-2014 financial year, after the election of last September, a certain amount was earmarked under IAY for beneficiaries in the rural areas.
Based on the criteria under the scheme, a ‘genuine list’ of beneficiaries was submitted to concerned department, said the aggrieved leaders and further alleged that instead of endorsing the list the MLAs, Zilla Parishads of the mentioned five assembly segments asked for 25 percent share per head.
Moreover, alleging that irregularities have besieged several other schemes like old Age Pension, widow beneficiary pension schemes and the impending National Food Security Act, it unanimously resolved to oppose the high handedness at any cost.
Further condemning the act of the people’s representatives (MLAs and ZPs), the gathering resolved to seek legal options. At the same time, it further said that the attitude was a mockery to the Gram Panchayat and warned to take their protest to Delhi, if they are patronised further.
It is learnt that the current grand under IAY has been increased to Rs 70,000 at the current financial year against the Rs 45,000 of the previous years.
