BISHNUPUR, October 21: The Winter Sports Meet 2013 of the Sambanlei Sekpil School, Kumbi in Bishnupur district was inaugurated today at the Kumbi Polo ground by S Budhichandra Singh, retired IAS who is now president of the Manipur Horse Riding & Polo Association as chief guest and Wangkhemcha Shyamjai, president of All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union presiding over the function.
Th Radheshyam Singh SP of the district, N Noren Singh retired Director of Manipur Fire Services, Brozendra Ningombam senior journalist and M Okendro Singh, world record holder and founder of the school attended as guests of honour respectively.
M Okendra Singh in his speech said that the noble game of polo which originated from Manipur is now facing existential problem in the land of its origin and added that a women’s polo exhibition match is being organized so as to preserve the game of polo during the sports meet.
Offering of milk to a banyan tree planted by Olympic bronze medallist MC Mary Kom, presentation of short play depicting the life and work of Hijam Irabot, women’s exhibition polo match, women’s horse race were the main events of the opening function.
