Japan stops funding sericulture projects due to security reasons

IMPHAL, November 17: The Director of Sericulture will launch a website on sericulture project in which the details of the department will be made available through the internet, said director of Sericulture H Ginjamang Simte in the prelude to the state-level workshop on the Implementation of Sericulture scheme in Manipur under the theme: Marching toward a new Horizon, at the Project Management complex Sangaipat this morning.

President of AMWJU W Shamjai Singh, Director of Sericulture Manipur H Ginjamang Simte and Joint Secretary (Tech) Regional Officer, Guwahati Central Silk Board, Ministry of textile, Government of India Sarat Deori attended the function as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.

In the president speech, H Ginjamang Simte stated that there will be a transparency in the sericulture on its projects and scheme from the month of December this year, adding that the department has taken up many Sericulture projects for the benefit of the people considering the potentials of Sericulture in the state.

He also mentioned the need to make free zones in the periphery of the state especially in the hills area where zoom cultivation is practiced, adding that the selection of the new sericulture membership will be under proper norms and the previous members who are not interested in sericulture will not give any chance in future.

There was full funding in the phase-I but in the phase-II, an unwanted incident took place in the year 2000, after which the funding body of sericulture from Japan had stopped funding saying that they will provide funds only when the state brings improvement in its law and order situation, the director narrated and further appealed to all concern to make sericulture industry be a free zone.

The chief guest of the function, Wangkhemcha Shamjai said that he was very glad to hear about the new information on sericulture which he maintained will improve the socio economic of the state. He further mentioned that the beneficiaries of the sericulture project are not aware about the sericulture and its importance which means that there is lack of bridge with media to expose in the public.

On this matter, the AMWJU president suggested to have a media cell of the sericulture department so as to communicate with deserving entrepreneurs and as well as general public of the state. He also expressed his concern on the discontinuation of funding due to the Security problem.

In the function, H Rajendra Singh AD (T) H/Nodal officer (RKVY), Directorate of Sericulture gave a slideshow presentation on implementation of Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna (RKVY) for 2009-10 to 2013-14.

The main problem of the Sericulture failure is fund allocation and construction of cocoon collection hut cum training centre, popularization of organic farming by constructing vermin composting pits, Rajendar said.

After the inaugural function, a media interactive programme was followed.
