IMPHAL, November 20: A man died when he was punched on the back of his head by an acquaintance over a petty argument at Achanbigei Maning Labuk under Heingang Police Station at around 1.30 pm today. According to reports, the assaulter identified as Moirangthem Basanta, 53, son of Tombimacha of Achambingei Mayai Leikai, was hired to transport newly harvested paddy from the field. However, when he reached there he discovered that the work was still pending.
Upon enquiry about the delay, Basanta and the vicitm Sanasam Sanathoi alias Isen, 35, son of Jatra of Khabam Maning Leikai, entered into a heated argument. Sanathoi told the driver to leave, telling him that he will hire another tractor to transport the harvest. Thereafter, Basanta struck the victim on the head rendering him senseless. He was taken to Catholic Medical Centre, Koirengei in a comatose state and doctors at CMC declared him brought dead.
An enraged mob stormed to the residence of the accused and destroyed portion of the house along with the furniture and other properties. Soon afterwards, a team of Heingang Police arrived there and took control of the situation.
The dead body has been deposited at JNIMS for post mortem.
The accused has been arrested by the team of Heingang Police Station and a case has been registered regarding the incident.
