IMPHAL, Nov 27: Imphal West Police commando, Bazaar Unit, seized a loaded Tata Truck travelling to Imphal from Dimapur for smuggling contraband tobacco products worth Rs 13 lakhs from Khoyathong Crossing today morning at around 8.30 am. The police team also arrested seven persons including the four owners of the consignment.
According to the police sources, upon getting specific information about the movement of the truck shipping the contraband items towards Imphal, a team of the commando unit under the supervision of the Imphal West SP K Jayenta seized the vehicle bearing registration number BR-24/ 5324. The driver indentified as Md Samir, son of late Yaima of Lilong Makha Leikai, along with the second driver were also apprehended by the police.
On further checking of the vehicle, they found 35 boxes of Golden Khaini, 45 boxes of Baba Black Zarda, 15 bags of Nevta dry tobacco, 16 bags of Sajan Gutka, 45 bags of Talab and one bag of Signel 350 Zarda stashed among the grocery items. The identities of the owners of the smuggled tobacco products could not be ascertained.
Police said the seized items will be handed over to City police station for initiation of official process.
