IMPHAL, November 8: The partly decomposed body of a 63-year-old woman was found inside a rented room at Napet Palli Crossing under Lamlai PS in Imphal East district at around 12.30 pm today. According to reports, the woman had been staying alone at the rented room for the last seven years.

The room was reportedly locked from outside and preliminary reports indicated that she suffered an injury in her head which could have been caused by blows from a sharp weapon, sources said. The body has been deposited at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences for post mortem examinations.

The deceased has been identified as Chandam Momon, 63, wife of Ibomcha from Malom and earned her livelihood selling vegetables at Napet Palli. After their divorce she returned to her parental home at Ockou Bazar about ten years back and then shifted to the rented room owned by Achoibam Naba, police stated.

Apprehension grew after she failed to turn up like usual to collect vegetables from her daughter who also runs a vegetable vendor at Lamlong Bazar for a prolonged period, police sources added.

To determine the reason, Bala, the daughter of the deceased, went to her mother’s parental home at Ickou but learnt from the locals that they have not seen her in the locality for the last few days. Bala proceeded to the rented room but found it locked from outside. There also, she talked with the neighbors to find some information about the whereabouts of her mother and received the same reply that she had not been sighted in the previous days. They further informed that her room was seen locked for the past two-three days. To quell her suspicions, Bala then broke the lock and only to discover the body of her mother, according to police sources.

Police arrived at the spot within a short period and took the body to JNIMS. A case has been registered in connection with the incident.
