Driver killed in Ukhrul accident

UKHRUL, December 9: In a tragic road accident, a 32-year old passenger vehicle driver was killed when his vehicle lost control and swirled down a deep gorge along the Ukhrul-Kamjong route on Sunday evening last. The tragic incident left the only passenger of the vehicle with grievous injuries.

Family sources said that the accident occurred around 3:30 pm Sunday when the ill-fated Tata Winger, while coming from Imphal side, skidded and fell into a gorge at a spot nearby Sambui Village bus waiting shed which is about 5 kms off Kamjong sub division towards Ukhrul town.

The deceased has been identified as Chanreingam Kasar, 32, son of Ramsing Kasar of Chadong Village but presently residing at Phungreitang West in Ukhrul district headquarters.

According to sources, the Winger taxi bearing Regn No AS-07C-1352 belonging to the deceased driver normally ply in between Ukhrul town and Kamjong but on the fatefull day it was returning from Imphal after servicing and there was only one occupant who had boarded at Gamnuom, about 45 kms from Ukhrul district hqs.

On finding the driver in a critical condition down at the gorge soon after the accident, passers-by took him to a nearby Assam Rifles camp for treatment at around 3:30 pm but he succumbed to injuries at around 7:30 pm the same day.    The injured occupant is said to be the headman of Ningthi village and is still under treatment, added the source.
