IMPHAL, November 3: A combined force of the Thoubal Police and Lilong Police had to fire several rounds of tear gas shells in their bid to save a bail-out accused of a murder case at Lilong Dam Makhong.
The incident happened around 10.30 am today.
Md Salim an accused in the murder case of Md Halim of the same locality some months back, had been released on bail from judicial custody of Sajiwa Central Jail some three days back.
Sources informed that he was abducted by family members of Md Halim while he was walking in the locality.
It is also learnt that Salim was assaulted by the family members of Halim after taking him to a nearby house.
It may be mentioned that Md Salim was arrested by the police and remanded to judicial custody at the Sajiwa Central Jail for his involvement in the killing of Md Halim near the Lilong Dam area some months back.
Locals who were already enraged over the killing of Md Halim joined in and after taking Salim out to a nearby field started beating him using sharp objects.
Meanwhile, on getting information about the incident, teams of the Thoubal district police and Lilong police rushed to the spot and rescued the accused from the hands of the mob. The police managed to disperse the mob after firing several rounds of tear gas shells. He was rushed to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences where doctors informed he received severe cut marks on his body.
Police suspected that sharp objects were used in attacking Salim, who is now undergoing treatment at the hospital.
