3 police station buildings to be opened in Feb

IMPHAL, January 7: Under the police modernization scheme in the state, eight new police station buildings were constructed of which three for Andro PS, Yairipok PS and Pallel PS will be inaugurated by the first week of February this year, informed deputy chief minister Gaikhangam.

The deputy CM who holds the home department told media persons after completing a tour at the new construction sites in Imphal East and Thoubal districts – Andro, Yairipok, Nongpok Sekmai and Pallel today.

The opening of the Nongpok Sekmai PS has been delayed as the administration block and office building are still incomplete, he said.

Gaikhangam said the Andro PS holds great importance from the security point of view. The infrastructure there is almost complete barring the wiring and power connection and awaits the final touches. Under the guidelines of the Union home minister, the officers at the police station have been instructed to make arrangement for the functioning of the station in full swing with the prescribed numbers of personnel.

He announced that the government is planning to recruit another 5000 personnel under the police modernization exercise before the code of conduct for the Parliamentary elections became applicable as the department is still short of manpower.

He stated that in the next part of his inspection, he will travel to Arong Nongmaikhong along the Mayang Imphal side, site for Lamlai PS and Thanga and Kumbi along Moirang side.

On the other hand, the construction of Noney PS has finished and construction for stations at Kaimai, Awangkhul, Khongsang and Joutangtak, Thangal and Machi awaits official notification. The people of Toloi areas have raised demand for a police outpost in their area, he said adding that the proper examination of the areas of jurisdiction of the stations will be conducted before giving the green signal for construction. He also disclosed the administration’s decision for up-gradation of Heirok PS observing that the current strength of 24 personnel there is disproportionate to the 15,000 persons under its jurisdiction. The minister said his department has been provided safety gears by the army and Assam Rifles and the personnel are conducting policing exercise related to counter insurgency with the latest gears.

The deputy CM was accompanied by Parliamentary Secretary K Meghachandra, MLA Andro Thounaojam Shyamkumar,, DGP Shahid Ahmad, Director of Manipur Fire Service Chandramani, Superintendent of Police of Imphal East Angam Kamei Romanus, Superintendent of Police of Thoubal AK Jhaljit, and officials of Manipur Police Housing Corporation.
