Sports luminaries castigate Asian Games gold medalist for crossing the line
IMPHAL, January 16: Padmashree Ngangom Dingku Singh has been arrested by the Imphal Police in connection with the alleged assault of three young weightlifters of the state today around 5 pm.
Police sources said that the Bangkok Asian Games boxing gold medallist was called to the police station in connection with the alleged assault and arrested.
He will be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West tomorrow, said the source.
Meanwhile, the Manipur Weightlifting Association has today condemned 1998 Asian Games boxing gold medallist, Ng Dingku Singh over his alleged assault of three weightlifting players.
Addressing a media briefing today, secretary of the association, Sunil Elangbam said that the star boxer and now boxing coach at SAI, Khuman Lampak, Ng Dingku Singh had brutally assaulted three young weightlifters identified as Soibam Aranbala, Chungkha Pamei and Puyam Yaiphabi who staying at the SAI Special Area Games hostel.
He alleged that Dingku had first poured water over the three young girls before hitting them with sticks around 7.30 pm on January 13.
During the night of January 14, Aranbala got high fever and was admitted at the Shija hospital.
He further condemned the Arjuna Awardee and called upon the civil organisations and NGOs to look into the incident.
While, condemning the incident, weightlifting coach, L Anita Chanu said that instead of assaulting the young girls so mercilessly, the Asian gold medallist could have talked properly and pointed out their mistakes.
If he was a good coach than he would have talked properly to the young players, she observed.
Today’s press meet was also attended by Arjun Awardee Olympian Ng Soniya Chanu; joint secretary, Manipur Weightlifting Association Kh Ningthem and coach L Anita Chanu.
