DIMAPUR, Jan 24 (NNN): The 96 hours Karbi Anglong district bandh has begun since 5 am today called by Karbi Peoples Liberation Tigers (KPLT), a powerful militant outfit operating in Karbi Anglong as a measure to boycott the Republic Day.
However, transporters from Manipur and Nagaland have been provided with tight security in the trouble torn Karbi Anglong, according to a senior journalist based in Diphu.
Assam police personnel have started escorting the Manipur and Nagaland based transporters from Khatkhati near Dimapur till the end of the `KPLT jurisdiction`. The incoming transporters have also been escorted till Khatkhati by the Assam police.
It can be mentioned here that the Karbi militant organisation has called the 96 hours bandh since this morning and it will be concluded at 5 am of January 28.
KPLT considers the “Indian Republic as worthless”. It further said the Republic Day should be viewed as a `black day`. “People should abstain from observing Indian Republic day”, the Karbi militant outfit urged.
Mention may also be made here that the four-day Karbi Anglong bandh has come after a short respite of series of curfew impositions and bandhs following the ethnic problem between the Karbis and the Rengma Nagas in the district. Thousands of people from both the communities had to flee and scores of people were killed in the latest Karbi-Rengma Naga problem which began since December 15 last. At the moment, the situation is limping back to normalcy.
