IMPHAL, January 7: During his inspection tour of newly-built police stations, deputy chief minister Gaikhangam made a brief stop-over at the Special Police Officer (SPO D-Company) at Heirok part-III Heitupokpi and found only one of the 50 SPOs deployed.
Unhappy at the situation, he enquired about it to the lone personnel who had introduced himself as Roben Elangbam. Without any hesitation the personnel replied that the other personnel had return home or gone elsewhere for their personnel purposes and he had done the same. He stayed at the station from 10 am till evening at present.
However, it turned out that he did not recognize the person he was conversing with so freely was the home minister himself. As a token of appreciation to the personnel’s simplicity, the minister gave him a Rs 500 note.
Meanwhile, Gaikhangam also presented Rs 20,000 as cash incentive for the Nongpok Sekmai Police Station in recognition of their outstanding contribution in bringing back peace and normalcy in a previously militants infested area. The police station lacked various basic facilities including malkhana and lock up.
This police station assumed logistic importance because it lie right along the route once traverse and dominated by the many UG groups. After the police station was brought to the area normalcy has followed and people now move around till late in the night which was an unthinkable thing some time back.
