`State women though empowered, continue to face rights violation`

IMPHAL, January 10: Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, Mamta Sharma said that women in the state are already empowered in every field.

However, women of this state too are facing the sufferings and violations of rights.

She further said that police, press and politicians should take major role in order to fight with deprivation of women’s right and crimes against women in the state.

At the same time the mindset of the society should be changed, she added.

A team of the National Commission for Women (NCW) headed by its chairperson Mamta Sharma today interacted with women vendors of the three Ima markets of Manipur at Hotel Classic and discussed about the setting up of a North East Cell in NCW.

The formal function was also attended by chief secretary, PC Lawnkunga, principal secretary Barun Mitra, NCW’s NE in charge Laltingliano Sailo, NCW’s member Nirmala Samant Pravalkar, chairperson of Manipur State Commission for Women, Dr Ibetombi Devi as dignitaries.

Chairpersons of State Commission for Women across the North Eastern states also attended the function.

Social Welfare Minister, AK Mirabai, who attended as the chief guest of the formal function held before the interaction said that the three Ima Markets of Manipur are the symbol of empowerment in Manipur. She said that these markets are not only the markets but also the meeting points to discuss various issues when the state faces crucial situations.

She further said that in spite of the fact that the womenfolk of the state are industrious the incident of rape, domestic violence and various crimes against women is increasing in the state day by day. To fight with such crimes, the state government has constituted the State Women Commission in the year 2006. However, the number of crimes does not dwindle in the state as of now.

She said that the women and children of the north-eastern states suffer the most due to the arm conflict in the region.

Hundreds of women have become widows and hundreds of children became orphans in the region due to the arm conflict.

She further said that the National Commission for Women is ever welcome any proposals for setting up a shelter home in the state.
