Ten thousand Baptist congregate at TNBC quadrennial

IMPHAL, February 22: Nearly a congregation of ten thousand strong was witnessed at Nongdam Tangkhul village today at the third day of the Tangkhul Naga Baptist Convention Quadrennial Convention. The Nongdam village was a flurry of activity in accommodating the huge number of Baptist which are camped at the area to take part in the four day long convention held every four years.

It was mentioned that nearly 133 churches from North, South and East Tangkhul areas are participating. The majority of the attendees are camped at about 1 kilometre from the Nongdam Baptist Church in approximately 140 makeshift tents. “We are happy to be here and all of us are participating in different programs, we come from Ukhrul district and camping near the riverside in a pleasurable experience, it is in the name of the Lord and for furthering the Baptist Church,” Jajo mentioned to IFP reporter.

The third day saw opening of the morning worship service by North Tangkhul Naga Baptist Association followed by invocation, scripture reading, hymn of praise and special numbers. The noon worship service saw western tangkhul choir followed by theme song with a formal function. It was attended by minister Govindas Konthoujam, MLA Victor Keishing and Preshow Shimray among other dignitaries.   

Cultural shows were presented by members of STNBA, NTNBA, ETNBA, TNBA (Somra), Meeitei Christian group, Kabui Naga dance etc. The evening worship service was held from 6 pm till 8 pm. The speakers of the day were Reverend Dr Jerry Spencer, Dr Koshy Kurien, Dr Bob Bowen. Benediction was conducted by Reverend Silas Keishing, Smart Kashung and Reverend L Khasim.

The convention will conclude on Sunday formally and will be attended by deputy chief minister Gaikhangam.
