Abuse of power again: VDF personnel thrash youth

IMPHAL, March 8: Village Defense Force (VDF) personnel assaulted a minor identified as Angom Loyumba, 16, son of A Ranjit of Wangkhei Thambalkhong on Saturday in front of the traffic island near Raja Dumbra School, Palace Gate around 2.35 pm.

Following the assualt, the minor recieved five stitches at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS).

Briefing the media, the victim said that he was returning home in a Dio moped bearing registration number MN-06S-9933 from one of his friend’s house when he met some VDF personnel who told him to stop. However, he was not able to stop all of a sudden due to poor brakes and the VDF personnel came rushing towards him and hit him on the head with their service SLR guns. He fell down unconsciously.

Locals who witnessed the incident said that the act of the VDF personnel was unacceptable. Another said that witnessing the incident in which the youth was thrashed without any reason, the locals rushed towards the VDF personnel who ran away on seeing the approaching mob. The locals added that the VDF personnel in the past have harassed passersby on several occasions and no actions were taken.
