IMPHAL, March 15: The Pride Parade for the LGBTI community was held today. This parade is the first ever of its kind in Manipur. The walk demanding ‘Justice, Equality & Dignity’ began at the Youth Hostel, Khuman Lampak to Lamyanba Shanglen, Palace compound.
Santa, Secretary of the All Manipur Nupi Manbi Association (AMANA) quoted ‘We shouldn’t have to hide. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which India has ratified, grants all human beings the Right to marriage and to start a family. Article 14 of the Indian Constitution guarantees us Right to Equality. Why are we then treated differently?
The ‘Walk of pride’ strongly condemns the ruling of the Supreme Court in India on Sec. 377 of its Penal Code, which criminalizes consensual same-sex relations. The walk of pride is part of the pride parades being held across the country by the LGBTI community and was supported by SAATHI-PEHCHAN, Alliance & the American Jewish World Service.
