IMPHAL, March 14: Irom Chanu Sharmila donated a sum of Rs 4 lakhs to the International Committee of the Red Cross Society through the president All Manipur Working Journalist Union just before her arrest by a team of the Porompat Police.
She was re-arrested under section 309 for trying to commit suicide from Sharmila Kanba Lup Shanglen where she had continued her fast unto death demanding repeal of draconian Law Armed Force Special Powers’ Act 1958 AFSPA after her release yesterday.
Speaking to the media persons during the handing over of the amount to the AMWJU president, Shamila said that she was making the donation to the international organisation and not to its Indian branch as she wanted to help in persons who are affected by natural calamities anywhere in the world and not just restrict her help to India.
She further expressed her desire to see her small token to help bring global harmony and for the people of the world to help each other when anyone is in problem.
Meanwhile, personnel of the Porompat Police led by OC Chandrakumar along with lady officers and lady personnel arrested Sharmila under FIR No 55 (3) 2014 under Porompat Police Station under section 309 at around 4pm today.
A brief tussle however, ensued between the police and Sharmila’s supporters who shouted “Repeal Armed Force Special Power Act, Save Life of Sharmila,” and “save women’s Life.”
Soon after police reinforcement led by senior police officer, Imphal east Police District Husne Jaman additional SP and some other lady police personnel arrived at the SAKAL Sanglen .
Later Sharmila was forcefully pulled up by the lady police personnel from the Sanglen and taken to the Porompat Police Station at around 5pm and produced before N Naoteneshori Devi Duty Magistrate Imphal East at around 6 pm.
She was remanded to 15 days judicial custody remains till March 29 and lodged her inside the JNIMS security ward.
