CNPO visits wildfire victims; appeals for relief

CHANDEL, April 13: The Chandel Naga People’s Organization (CNPO) today reached out to fire victims of Lamkang Khunjai and Laiching Khunman and extended help in cash and kinds.

After meeting the affected victims, CNPO had come out with a statement appealing the district administration and the state government for extending compensation and relief materials to the victims whose living houses and properties were destroyed by the disastrous wild forest fire on April 12 at three different villages namely Lamkang Khunjai, Laiching Minou and Khudei Khullen, thereby rendering many homeless after the incident.

The spot enquiry conducted at Lamkang Khunjai in the presence of the district police by the visiting team of CNPO led by its president Ws Kanral Anal revealed that all the 12 houses were gutted down to ashes completely by the fire.

The victims whose houses have been completely destroyed in the incident have been identified as J Shetit  Lamkang; SS Kotoi Lamkang; Gracy wife of Huimi; JV Shephung, 50, SK Koshoi, 67, Th Roshamy wife of Cr Benjamin, Th Shanday, 40 and wife of (L) Momo, Th Darchut, 41 and Sk Tomani wife of Th Darlun Lamkang.

As per the statement given to media and the police by the village chief of Lamkang Khunjai Sk Kono and the victims, it is estimated that property worth crores of rupees had been destroyed by the fire.

While narrating the bitter experience to media, J Shetit who is the village pastor informed that his property worth Rs 20 lacs had been damaged.  Rice-mill, gold chains, gas cylinders, TV sets, building materials for construction of new house, documents including educational certificates, army discharge certificates, gun licenses, ration cards and a cash of Rs 6000 are  among other items.

SS Kotoi and Gracy informed that property worth Rs 7-10 lacs had been damaged among which 20 bags of paddy, Rice –mill, Almirah, gas cylinders and kitchen utensils were among others.

JV Shephung claimed that a kitchen and a living room attached together was burnt down to ashes along with 70 bags of paddy, almirah, new house construction materials worth Rs 25 thousand, cash of Rs 25 thousand, educational certificates for his sons and daughters and estimated property worth Rs 10 lacs lost in the fire.

Sk Koshoi informed that his property worth 10-15 lacs have been completely damage. His damaged items included Bed, almirah TV set, inverter gold chain, sofa set, cash of 70 thousand rupees and 50 bags of paddy.

Th Roshamy claimed she lost properties and materials along with a cash of Rs 1 lac kept for a marriage ceremony to be held on April 25 have been completely damaged along with other household properties including almirah, TV sets, inverter, cylinders, 50 bags of paddy, gold chain worth Rs 25 thousand.

Estimating the worth of property loss at Rs five lacs approximately, Th Shanday informed that gold necklace worth Rs 70 thousand, cash of 1 lac, almirahs, sofa set, TV sets and other items have been completely damaged.

Th Darchut estimated his property loss at Rs 10 lacs including Rs two lakh, gold chains, Tata Sumo RC book, educational certificates and all kitchen utensils have been damaged.

SK Tomani, 42, wife of Darlun estimated her loss at around Rs 15-20 lakh which included materials kept for constructing a new house, a cash of Rs 40 thousand, ICDS documents, 50 bags of paddy, almirah, TV set and all kinds of kitchen utensils.

Later the team proceeded towards Laiching Khunman where two houses were razed to the ground yesterday and inspected the site of the incidence.

The CNPO president later addressed a meeting calling the attention of the district authority and the government to take up action for providing necessary aids to the suffering victims.

It was also reported during the meeting that five houses and one community hall were also gutted down by a wildfire yesterday at Khudei khunou.

Meanwhile, the Lamkang Naga Kver Kunpun after visiting the Lamkang Khunjai village has expressed gratitude to all organizations and individuals who extended helps to the victims in cash or in kind.
