IMPHAL, April 23: The CorCom has wished the people of Manipur on the occasion of the 122nd Khongjom War anniversary which falls on April 23.

A statement of the umbrella body of various militant outfits of Manipur has said the CorCom pays its obeisance to the martyrs of the land who had bravely fought and sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the land against the British for one month and three days from March 24 to April 27 in 1981.

It said in 1885, after the British had colonised Burma, only Thailand and Manipur were independent countries.

During that time, the western imperialist countries in their bid to take hold of the petroleum and minerals found in the region wanted to make inroads into Burma and China from India after passing through Manipur, it said.

On April 23, 1891, The New York Times had carried a report saying that a rail-line passing through Manipur from India to Burma should be constructed, further said the statement.

The Khongjom war is not only relevant to Manipur, but it also occupies an important place in world history, it said.

Most people shares the belief that the war was a local event, it said and added, however, the event is also important in the world history.

According to The London Mail, the Khongjom War was the most serious calamity that has befallen the British Army in India since the battle of Malwa, further said the CorCom release.
