Dy Speaker escapes bomb attack

UKHRUL, April 9: Deputy Speaker, Manipur State Legislative Assembly, Preshaw Shimray today escaped unhurt, while his vehicle got partially damaged and a security personnel of his escort party wounded after his convoy came under a powerful bomb attack at Leingangching area in Litan Sareikhong of Ukhrul district.

Sources said that the attack came when Preshaw Shimray and his escort convoy coming from Ukhrul side reached Leingangching at around 3:10 pm on Wednesday.

The vehicle in which the dy speaker was travelling was partially damaged and a personnel of the convoy sustained injury in the incident.

A deep crater was also created at the spot.

According to sources, the dy speaker was returning to Imphal along with the former MP Rishang Keishing and his son Victor Keishing in separate vehicles. The former MP and his son had just passed Litan and Preshaw and his convoy was crossing the spot when the suspected IED bomb went off.

The attack was suspected to be carried out by a suspected hill based militant outfit. Following the loud report of the explosion, the security convoy team responded and opened a number of firing shots even as the team kept heading towards Imphal straightaway.

It is learnt that the dy speaker had been to his native village Poi where he had halted the night yesterday and was coming back to Imphal today when the incident happened.
