JIRIBAM, April 22: The United Committee Manipur president Y Nabachandra Singh in press meet held Tuesday at 4:30 pm at Jiribam PWD guest house has condemned the physical assault of Kachungai Panmei who stays in a rented house along with another two Zeliangrong students at Jiribam Lamkhai on April 13 by some unidentified miscreants.

In the meantime, the Imphal East SP Angam R Kamei and IG Clay Khongsai have landed at the sub divistion to take stock of the situation.

It may be mentioned that there has been social tension in the sub division since April 10 following the assault of Naoba of Boroikhal village by Keidapao, who is an immediate village neighbour of Rangketlong.

After this incident, the villagers of Borokhal took refuge at the auditorium of Jiribam Higher Secondary School.

During the press meet, the UCM president also appealed to all the community leaders to work to restore communal harmony in the sub division so that peaceful co-existence of all communities could be established in the sub division again.

He mentioned that the two incidents should be dealt with a balanced view and the miscreants involved in both the two incidents have destabilised the social cohesion and further charged that they were trying to destroy the integrity of the people of the state.

So, the miscreants should be awarded befitting punishment according to law of the land, Nabachandra added.

Nabachandra also maintained that the quarrelling or physical assault between two different communities should not be considered as communal action; instead it should be treated as a quarrel and fighting between two individuals.

The UCM president also appreciated the initiatives of the community leaders who are organising joint sittings at the Officer Conference Hall of the ADC Jiribam.

He further expressed his concern on the press statement of the Zeliangrong Students’ Union (ZSU) and appealed the leadership of ZSU to extend physical involvement on the issue.

During the press meet, United Peoples’ Front president BM Yaima Shah also expressed that the people of the sub division should try to avoid unwanted incidents.
