Present day Shumang Leela needs revitalisation: Kanhailal

IMPHAL, April 12: “The creative and artistic spirit of our forefathers, who played Shumang Leela, is missing in the present day practice of the art form”. This was stated by Heisnam Kanhailal of KalaKshetra in his address on the occasion of the 13th Shumang Leela Day.

Qualities like the vocal resonance of the olden day artist are unique, they could relate with the spectators without the help of the microphones. He stressed that the present practice of the art form needs a revitalisation.

Sharing the same view, L Upendro, Director of JNMDA said that the creative quality of the artist of olden days was very vibrant. The present day Shumang Leela needs to be developed more to reach greater height

Chief Secretary, PC Lawmkunga, who hails from Mizoram, said that Meitei culture is a beautiful culture and he is moved by it. Wherever he goes, he will spread the message of its beauty. He also added that games and sports is another forte of Manipur.

The three of them graced the 13th Shumang Leela Day. The programme was organised by Manipur State Shumang Leela Council. As part of the observation, awards were presented to different personalities. Wareppa Naba, Shumang Leela Director and Bony (Bitek) Thongangcha of Poknapham Daily were awarded Iboyaima Award and Iboyaima fellowship respectively.

Medical assistance was given to aged artiste of Shumang Leela and Peacemaker Artiste Assn. presented a play to mark the occasion.
