Sit in calls for social boycott of rape accused

IMPHAL, April 26: The authority of Pangei Union, Imphal East conducted a sit-in-protest cum public meeting this evening in connection to the recent Pangei rape case of a four year old girl by a 54-year-old man in the area under Heingang Police Station.

The sit-in-protest was organised by the womenfolk of Pangei, local Meira Paibis, club etc against the accused Laishram Bijoy to give befitting punishment even if the court has sent him to jail.  

Later, a public meeting was held in connection with the incident and some resolutions were taken by the locals against the family of the accused. The resolution consisted of three points which include the resolution that the accused Laishram Bijoy must face social boycott.

Another resolution being that the family of the accused must not give shelter to him until and unless an understanding or agreement is arrived with the locals. If the family disobeys the restriction, they will face the same punishment. The other being that the locals of Pangei and other individuals will provide physical and mental help to the victor, a minor. The meeting was presided by N Yangba Meitei  

A complaint was filed to the Pangei Union by the family of the victim that on March 26 this year, an awful incident happened in which a 54-year-old man has allegedly raped a four year girl.

Meanwhile, the All Manipur Gorkha Students’ Union has strongly condemned the rape of a minor and the death of a volunteer in police firing while demonstrating against the rape.  The union has further expressed gratitude to all the Civil Society Organisations for their support – physical as well as moral- during the protest against the rape.

The union further said that if the government fail to deliver justice within a month’s time as assured, the union will launch fresh agitations. A public meeting will be held at kalapahar Community Hall on April 27, it said
