IMPHAL, April 22: The Naga Women`s Union and Indigenous Women`s forum for North-East Indai have said that rampant violence against women in the society has reached an alarming level.
A joint statement of the two body citing a few cases like the rape of a 13 year old girl by 65 year old S Ngaopuni of Poumai Colony at Koirengei Hills, on April 17, 2014; rape and assault of a woman Bina (name changed), 43, by Waikhom Saratkumar, 45 son of Iboton of Thoubal Kshetri Leikai at his house on April 14, 2014; rape of minor girl at Sora Mayai Leikai who was abducted and raped by Md Rahman alias Namba, 22, son of Md Samu of Sangai Humpham Cherapur and the rape of a minor girl aged around 5 years by Povetso at Mohonkhola, Kohima on April 13, 2014 and also the case of trafficking which came to light when an inmate of Grace Academy, Hamleikhong in Ukhrul District, a girl of 14 years escaped from the clutches of alleged traffickers while her younger sister of class V is still believed to be in the custody of traffickers, has further condemned such crimes.
It continued that these few recent cases have shocked our collective conscience and it is an indication of how inhumane the society can become.
The joint statement further condemned such acts of gender insensitivities and disrespect of women in the society.
NWU also expressed its outmost resentment on the gruesome act of sexual assault, atrocities and trafficking of women and children.
The NWU and IWFNEI appealed to every sensible person to denounce it and cooperate in rooting out the social evils and urged the law enforcing agencies to award befitting punishment to the culprits as per the law of the land and promptly trace and rescue the missing minor girl from the kidnappers in Ukhrul.
It has further urged to the people to encourage a sense of morality, responsibility, discipline and God-fearing is duly imparted in the families, schools, Churches, institutions, etc to eradicate such violence and cruel acts against Women.
