JIRIBAM, May 11: Around 400 vehicles are stranded at Jiribam due to the ongoing indefinite chakka-bandh along National Highway 37 called by the Joint Forum for Transport Welfare, Tamenglong.
The chakka-bandh has totally affected normal life along National Highway-37, paralysing the construction works of the railway line also.
The bandh has been enforced since May 7 last, reacting to government inaction regarding repairing and development work of the around 40 km long Khongsang to Tamenglong road.
The PWD office at Tamenglong district has also been closed down as part of the agitation.
A memorandum was submitted to the state Chief Minister Okram Ibobi on April 17 to develop the road and the Chief Minister had assured that development work would start before April 27 to meet the forum’s demand.
In the Jiribam area, the Zeliangrong Students Union, Manipur has strongly supported the agitation.
The forum has met various village chiefs, students’ unions, frontal organisations, women organisations and Land Ownership Action Committee NH-37 (Tamenglong-/Khongsang Road) who have wholeheartedly supported the bandh.
Meanwhile, the forum has also warned various railway companies like Coastal Railway, Trevini Railway, Simplex Company, ABCI Company and its officials against violating the bandh.
