IMPHAL, May 9: Crimes against women and men in the state are never reduced up to our expectations even though various steps have been taken to stop such untoward incidents, said Dr Ibetombi Devi, chairperson of the Manipur Commission for Protection of Women.

Various crimes are committed in the state but the culprits escape easily after committing the crimes which spawn more crimes and this vicious circle continues, she lamented to the media

Culprits escaped easily due to various factors such as the victims hailing from lower strata of the society or improper investigation of the case by the concern authorities etc, she added.

She pointed out that the abuse of drugs and alcohol in the state is rising and it is being used as a daily necessity and, as per the records, crimes are committed under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Many people assume that there is no dowry system in the state but many dowry related crimes against women are also happening.

45, 19, 28, 124, 96, 66, 23 cases were registered in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 to the commission respectively, she informed.

Continuing that in 2013, the commission took field visits for 47 out of 66 cases whereas it has made only six field visits out of 23 this year, Dr Ibetombi Devi asserted that if proper investigative field visits were done then the criminal can surely be arrested and punished, adding crimes in the state and its investigations are in an imbalanced state.
