Miscreants assault driver at Karong

IMPHAL, May 3: Some miscreants suspected to be Nagas assaulted the driver of a Tata winger in Senapati district on the evening of April 30 last.

The driver identified as Wairokpam Romesh, 24, son of (L) Ranjit of Yumnam Patlou in Imphal East was brutally assaulted by five miscreants.

According to Romesh, the incident took place when he was bringing back six students and their parents from Novodiya Vidyalaya School, Mao in his Tata Winger.

The parents had asked him to pick up the students from school for their summer vacation, he said.

They were on their return trip when some vehicles overtook them and verbally abused them. After crossing Lairou, some people in a black Santro car asked them to stop in a secluded place in a suspicious manner.

So, the parents of the students asked the driver to stop in a place near some police station. While returning after dropping his passengers, the miscreants chased the driver from Karong Bridge and after stopping him brought him to a place near the construction site of the Senapati District Hospital around 3:40 pm.

Later, the driver was asked to give whatever belonged to him. They started assaulting him with a stick and forced him to call the passengers to bring 10 thousand rupees immediately.

They lodged a complaint in the Senapati police station about the incident and gave the registration number, NL07/ 4440, of the Santro car and the cell phone number they used, 9612665486.

The Yumnam Patlou Meira Paibee, Morning star Club, Yumnam Patlou and Imphal-Saikul road Bus and Winger Association has strongly condemned the act as inhuman. They have urged the government to take appropriate measures as such incidents are frequent in this route for the drivers who are struggling to survive.
