UKHRUL, June 18: Even as normal life was paralysed, no untoward incidents were reported in Ukhrul district during the 48-hour bandh sponsored by the UNC which is ending midnight tonight.

The town’s market and main road wore deserted appearances with all major businesses remaining closed while the public and all sorts of vehicles stayed off the road, especially from Dungrei Junction, Hungpung to Kharasom Junction, Hunphun.

Passenger bus and Winger taxi services along Ukhrul-Imphal route and that of town-village routes were severely disrupted.

The shutdown in the district was enforced by the Tangkhul Frontal Organizations (TFOs) under the aegis of the UNC.

Though telecommunications, power, water supply, medical services were normal, the district’s mini secretariat and other government offices remained closed during the total shutdown.

However, observance of the total shutdown was by and large peaceful as no untoward incidents were reported till the time of filing this report late in the evening.

The UNC had called the total bandh in all Naga dominated hill districts of the state, to protest the alleged communal policies of Manipur government and also to pressurise the Indian government to expedite the process of Alternative Arrangement for the State’s Naga tribes.

The bandh began from the midnight of June 16 last and is concluding midnight tonight.
