Delhi court issues fresh warrant against Sharmila

IMPHAL, July 17: The trial of Irom Sharmila Chanu under the Parliament Street Police Station FIR no 222/06 under section 309 was supposed to continue in the court of Akash Jain today and tomorrow in Patiala House court no 20 B, however, the matter was pushed till October 30 and 31.

The IFP had reported that the Manipur Central jail authority has sent a letter to the concerned magistrate to defer her appearance date.

Confirming the story, a statement from the Human Rights Alert has stated that a letter from superintendent of police, Manipur Central Jail stating their inability to produce Sharmila due to want of approval from the Manipur government was placed before the court.

It said that the letter has further stated that since Sharmila is in custody as an under trial prisoner in connection with another matter and is undergoing hospitalisation in JNIMS,Imphal, the counsel sought for sufficient time to take appropriate approval to ensure proper health care for the accused during the journey.

The HRA statement also said that fresh production warrant was issued and next date of hearing is fixed on October 30 and 31. Sharmila was represented by advocate VK Orih and Pankaj Sinha of the Human Rights Law Network.

It has also stated that the EEVFAM case of 1528 extrajudicial executions in Manipur in the Supreme Court was initially listed to be heard on July 14, but due to lack on enough judges in the court the matter was not listed in the final list.

The matter is with the office of the Chief Justice of India and the new bench and the new date will be fixed soon, it is hope, it said.

Sharmila was to appear before the metropolitan court in connection with a case registered against her for staging protest by fasting demanding repealed of AFSPA at Jantar Mantar, in 2006.
