SENAPATI, August 13: The monsoon rains failed to deter the public from coming out to pay homage to General Thangal and Bir Tikendrajit today.
The annual Patriot’s Day observation of General Thangal was held at General Thangal Ecological Park, Mayangkhang organized by the Senapati district administration and Thangal Union.
The observation was attended by deputy commissioner Jacintha Lazarus, additional DC Kangpokpi DK Thangboi and CEO, Senapati ADC Rang Peter the occasion as chief guest, functional president and guest of honor respectively.
In the presence of ADM, SP, church leaders, tribe leaders, civil bodies, district level officers, village leaders and Thangal Tribe leaders, the great Manipuri warrior was honoured with lying of wreaths by dignitaries, gun salute from Senapati Police and devotional prayers.
Famous musical band Life Pages and other local bands entertained the crowd.
Meanwhile, the Thangal Union made a representation to the government requesting black topping of the approach road to the park, electrification, renovation, beautification, guest house, drinking water facility and installation of the statue of another Thangal warrior Charai Thangal.
The Thangal Union also expressed displeasure over the inclusion of a “distorted and contentious history of the Thangal General” in the class VI syllabus of the Board of Secondary Education Manipur and demanded revision of the lesson with correct facts from the history.
Other highlights of the observation include prayers and songs from different religious groups and communities.
Deputy Commissioner Jacintha speaking at the function lauded and appreciated the Thangal Union and organising committee for the programme.
The DC also assured to pursue with the State government the demands of the union at the earliest.
CEO Rang Peter, MCS on the occasion praised the leadership of General Thangal and Bir Tikendrajit who are today heroes for the youth to get inspiration from.
