IMPHAL, August 20: Several Zeliangrong bodies have submitted a representation to the director general of police, Manipur declaring the claims of the Zeliangrong Union and the Maram Naga Union settling the Maram assault incident in accordance to cu1stomary law as “abetment of crime.”
Referring to the assault of Ringsanbou Newmai a student of the Don Bosco Maram on July 28, the Zeliangrong Youth Front, All Zeliangrong Students’ Union and the Zeliangrong Union Manipur in a joint statement have said there is no such law in customary, national laws or international laws that such crime should be settled by offering a pig measuring five fist or over exchange of rice plate.
It questioned the basis for their claims especially when the victim is struggling for life and undergoing medical treatment in the ICU of JNIMS hospital?
There ZU and MNU have no authority to discuss this particular matter without the participation, involvement, consent or knowledge of the victim family as such it is total contradictory to customary or any law, it said.
Further according to the statement, the victim family has already declared their stand and position very clear of which was widely publicised in various newspapers that any settlement without delivering justice to the victim shall not be accepted.
It said the ZU and MNU announcing their claimed of settlement on the highly condemned crime shows the conspiracy of ZU and MNU in the crime and accused them of being hand in glove with the accused.
It has further urged the police to take action in the case which has been registered under FIR u/s 326/34 IPC against the accused Hingba Mathew, warden, Josephine Girls Hostel, Maram.
The State Home Minister claimed of “people friendly police” force has now turned into “criminal friendly police” force, if the accused of the murder attempt can be let scot free then the State govt, it said.
