Commando driver found shot dead after hostage drama

IMPHAL, September 25: Armed miscreants allegedly hijacked a bullet proof vehicle (Rakshak) of the Imphal West district police commandos and took the driver away with them late this evening.

Later the bullet riddled body of the driver identified as only Joy attached with the Wangoi Police Commandos was found abandoned along with the bullet proof vehicle at Sabal Leikai Thambalkhong.

Sources said around 9pm, three persons came on foot from the Khuyathong roundabout side and stopped an auto rickshaw bearing regd number MN 04D 1519 near the Aircel Office.

Suspicious of the three, a frisking team of the VDF on the opposite side of the road stopped the three-wheeler which resulted in a brief scuffle between them and the three, informed reliable sources.

The three soon fled towards the PCTC Oil Pump side and found the bullet proof vehicle with only the driver inside.

After overpowering the police commando driver, three fled towards the Minuthong side.

Meanwhile, after recovering both the driver`™s body and the vehicle, a huge team of police arrived at the spot and conducted a search operation.

Sources also said that the police had blanked fired some rounds at the spot where the body and the vehicle were recovered.

Meanwhile, the driver of the auto rickshaw identified as Seram Ibomcha Singh of Koirengei and his rickshaw allegedly involved in the first incident which triggered the hostage drama has been taken into custody by the police at the time of filing of this report. Further details are awaited.
