IMPHAL, September 27: The Sunday Market Street Vendor Welfare Association (SMSVWA) observed its 4th foundation day at the Manipur Press Club today.
The function was graced by minister of Social Welfare, AK Mirabai as the chief guest, vice president Imphal Municipal Corporation, Thambaljao Thaomei as the president and Salam Tiken Singh chairperson, Bazar Committee, IMC as the guest of honour.
While speaking at the function AK Mirabai said that not only white collar job can bring development for the State but inculcating work culture, learning to take responsibilities and having creative mind can also help in bringing prosperity.
She also said that there is nothing to be ashamed of what one do for livelihood, as long as it does not harm others. She also assured the association that the government will extend its possible help wherever necessary.
Delivering his speech at the function, Salam Tiken Singh pointed out that the association should not only focus on Sunday and Khwairamband market area but also can expand its market even on other week days at other places as well, as it will help in generating income and expanding business.
Giving the keynote address of the function Maibam Shitaljit Singh, general secretary of the SMSVWA said that the vendors are facing lots of problems as there is no proper space for selling their goods. Most of the spaces are occupied by vehicles parking on the streets, he added.
He further appealed the authority concerned to look into the matter, and also demanded for cutting down of tax fee for the vendors.
Shitaljit also maintained that like other States of the country, it would be good if there are similar market places in the State too, as it will help the educated but unemployed youths in finding their means of livelihood.
