Awareness of child rights needs to be spread widely

IMPHAL, November 12: The Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) celebrated its second foundation day and released the 2013-2014 annual report at the conference hall of MCPCR, Imphal.

Speaking as the chief guest of the function A Nabachandra Singh Chairperson, MCPCR said that the duties and responsibilities of MCPCR are to keep monitoring all children related laws in the state.

The MCPCR held its regular sitting during the year to chalk out cases which the Commission has initiated and also settle the important issues he said.

He further said that the MCPCR is mainly focusing its report on three areas, namely: promoting, protecting and monitoring.

A Nabachandra Singh also said that the MCPCR has recommended the state government to include the population of children with disabilities and child labour in the record of statistics and census.

Dr Ch Narendra, consultant MCPCR said that it is important to know whether the commission is doing its duty in making rights accessible to all.

As there are increasing number of crime against children in the state, parents should be aware of the different Child Rights Acts such as Child Labour Act, Juvenile Justice Care and Protection Act, Right to Education (RTE), Protection of Children from Sexual Offence Act, 2012 (POCSO) etc.

However, it is not only the duty of government to disseminate the awareness of such child rights, but also of the civil organisations and parents to bring down the rate of crime against children in the state.

Mongjam Abhiram, joint director, MACS, special invitees of the function said that protecting children is protecting the future of the state and if the state fails to protect its children then it simply meant there is no hope and future in the state.
